They say that certain experiences in our lives have the potential to change us… and I’m living proof of that. Nine weeks ago, I went in for surgery to remove a brain tumor after years of watching and waiting. I wasn’t sure how I would feel on the other side, but sure enough… I came out ready to face every challenge that recovery brought my way.
In the years leading up to surgery, I had taken my health for granted and allowed my own insecurities to keep me from trying new things.
To be honest: before my surgery, I had never taken a single workout class. Yes, you heard that correctly. For years, I was too afraid to try a workout class because I was afraid of looking dumb or being the weakest one in the room.
Making it through my surgery truly put things in perspective. I don’t want to let fear hold me back any longer. I want to be the best version of myself: physically, mentally, and spiritually.
So as soon as my six-week workout restriction was lifted, I attended my first barre class. The following week, I wandered into a meditation and yoga class a few blocks from our apartment.
And when Athleta reached out with a challenge that would push me outside of my workout comfort zone—I was absolutely thrilled. They created the Up for Anything Challenge to celebrate the launch of their brand new workout tights and when the box arrived in the mail… I couldn’t wait to put them on.
Opening this box felt like an amazing belated Christmas gift!
Athleta’s newest tights are incredibly versatile—created for whatever workout plan or adventure you have on your calendar. Whether you’re headed to pilates, a spin class, a hike in the woods, or you simply love rocking that yoga pant lifestyle… these pants are up for the challenge.
The Up for Anything tights are incredibly flattering thanks to a fitted high-rise waistband and their Sculptek technology. They also come in some bright, bold colors if you’re tired of wearing a classic black pant. (Personally, I’m a legging traditionalist and only own them in black… however, I’m thinking of grabbing another pair in fuchsia to mix things up!)
Oh, and that’s not all. These workout pants have pockets.
Not one, not two, not even three… but FOUR highly versatile pockets made to store your keys, credit card, and even our phone! I love the idea of being able to run out the door for a quick workout and take everything you need with you. I think that’s my favorite feature.
Now onto the challenge:
We made the decision to try spin and it has always been a dream of mine to try a SoulCycle class. (The music, the vibe, the intensity… you know what I’m talking about!) So I convinced my friend Rebecca to come with me and we set a date!
When we arrived, the SoulCycle staff was incredibly accommodating. I tried on spin shoes for the first time and learned how to setup my bike for an optimal workout. It took me a minute to figure out how to get my feet snapped into the pedals, but once I mastered that… the rest was easy!
When we headed in for the class, I was blown away by the energy. Our instructor, Lauren, was incredibly positive. She managed to make one of the toughest workouts I’ve ever done—fun! She was super empowering and I understand why there wasn’t a single empty bike in the room. This girl rocks.
As soon as I got in the Uber on my way back, I texted my mom and described it as “therapy and exercise in one” — Can anyone relate? SoulCycle was unbelievable. I think I finally understand what all the hype is about!
As I write this, I may be too sore to comfortably walk from one side of the room to another… but, you won’t see me complaining! Spinning was incredible. Even though my muscles cramp easily with my electrolyte issues—I wasn’t embarrassed to be one of the slowest people in the class. I gave it everything I could and left feeling empowered.
If you’re on the fence about trying something new… I want to encourage you to give it a shot. Don’t be afraid to be the slowest or weakest person in the class. I let that hold me back for far too long.
Just check your fears and ego at the door. Have fun and challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone. Attending my first spin class was truly one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time! Thanks again to Athleta for challenging me to step outside of my workout comfort zone!

Yay! Go Natalie! Trying something new can be SO overwhelming and scary. My anxiety kicks into gear even when I attend classes I attend regularly. I hope you keep up with Spin ( or whatever activity fuels your soul!) Also, completely random, but I also have an electrolyte imbalance that causes my muscles to cramp up constantly. Do you have any tips or tricks to help with that? My trainer recommended….mustard. I swear, It helps! Anywho, Cheers!
